The State Enterprise “Moldelectrica” was created by order of the Ministry of Industry and Energy of the Republic of Moldova no. 92 on October 19, 2000. Thus, on the basis of the existing branches of the State Enterprise “Moldtranselectro”, starting on November 01, 2000, four branches of high-voltage networks began their activity within the newly established enterprise “Moldelectrica”: the Centru (Center) branch in the city of Vatra, the Sud (South) branch in the city of Comrat, the Nord (North) branch in the city of Balti and the Nord-Vest (North-West) branch in the city of Donduseni. In addition to these, the fifth branch was created, namely the Training Center. On September 23, 2002, the State Enterprise “Autoelectrotrans” was merged with “Moldelectrica”, and on its basis a new division was created – the Production Base. After the reorganization of the “Moldelectrica” in 2008-2009, its structure includes the following five directorates: Central Dispatch, Electricity Transport, Economic and Financial, Human Resources, and Administrative Directorates. The Training Center branch was liquidated on April 01, 2009, and on its basis, a training center subdivision was established within the “Moldelectrica”.
Since 2004, the length of power transmission lines has been modified due to the initiatives of the Government of the Republic of Moldova regarding their modernization as well as in the context of the provisions of the Energy Package II. Thus, the total length of power lines managed by the State Enterprise “Moldelectrica” is 4067 km. Current and capital repair works, as well as their reconstruction and modernization, are carried out annually. During 2001-2002, a considerable amount of work was also carried out to restore the 35-110 kV power lines damaged following the impact of glaze ice that occurred in November 2000. The implementation of the provisions of the Energy Package II began in 2005. During that period, the equipment of the 330 kV power stations in Chisinau, Straseni and Balti was modernized, two transformers were replaced at the 330 kV power station in Chisinau, and the 110 kV electrical substations were rebuilt.
Also, new 110 kV electrical power transmission lines were built (including cross-border interconnectors), and 330 kV power lines were modernized.
The implementation of the Automated Commercial Electricity Recording System was completed, and the works related to the modernization of communication and telemechanic devices and electricity recording systems were carried out. The technical and economic analysis and environmental impact study of the 400kV Balti-Suceava power transmission lines for the interconnection of the energy systems of the Republic of Moldova and Romania/EU were carried out.
As of the beginning of 2023, the number of “Moldelectrica” employees is 1291 people. The enterprise maintains 183 power stations with a voltage of 35 kV and above, with a total installed power of 4650.8 thousand kVA, including one 400 kV Vulcanesti substation, three 330 kV substations in Chisinau, Balti and Straseni, 131 – 110 kV, 47 – 35 kV and 1 – 10/6 kV substations. Special attention is given to renewable energy sources. As the situation on May 30, 2023, technical conditions have been issued for connecting the renewable energy-based power plants with a total installed power of 1358.2 MW to the electrical transmission networks. Ensuring the energy security of the Republic of Moldova is the main current task of the company. Thus, it is studied the possibility of synchronous connection to the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E). In this sense, in 2006, the joint request of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine for a synchronous connection to the ENTSO-E system has been submitted. For several years, SE “Moldelectrica”, NPC “Ukrenergo”, and CNTEE “Transelectrica” SA, jointly with the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Moldova and the Ministry of Economy of Romania, performed the works to prepare the necessary documents. Currently, the electro-energetic systems of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine have joined the ENTSO-E [ https://moldelectrica.md/ro/about/company_history (last update on May 31, 2023)].
